5 Great Reasons to Change Out Your Old Electric Garage Door Opener

Old garage door opener

Do you have an old garage door opener? Don’t you think that it is about time that you changed it? If you are still on the fence and not quite sure that you need to change the old electric garage door opener, the following reasons five are great sure to change your mind, so you can be sure your garage door is safe. In addition, you will learn how new technologies can help to make your life easier.

Make the garage a safer place

The garage door tends to be one of the main entrance point of homes that have attached garages. If you park your car in the garage, you are going to be using the door every time to leave and come home. If you have a workshop in the garage, or a place where you enjoy your hobbies, then you are going to be spending a lot of time there, as well. The garage door tends to get quite a bit of use, and if you happen to have an old opener, there is a chance it is not as reliable as it once was, and it could even be unsafe.

Door openers that were made before 1993 had only a single automatic reversal system, a mechanical system. This means that when the door lowers, it will reverse direction as soon as it comes into contact with something. After 1993, to increase the safety, there was an additional safety system added to the openers to help reduce the number of accidents. This other system utilizes photo eyes with two units that are placed between four to six inches off the ground. They have a beam of light that essentially connects the two. If anything were to break that beam, then the door will go back up automatically.

If you have an older system, or a system that does not have both of these safety features functioning, you are going to want to make sure that you upgrade to improve the safety.

Stop the door opener from being used by intruders

With older garage door systems that utilize DIP switches that are set in +, -, or 0 positions, it is possible for people to receive the signal. These types of older units make it easier for criminals to get the codes and to get into the house through the garage.

However, since 1993, the door openers have been using better technology that utilize rolling codes. This means that whenever you press the remote button, it will generate a new code for the next use. This makes it more difficult for criminals. Chamberlain Group (including the brands Chamberlain, LiftMaster and Craftsman) began to use the Security+ system, which offered up millions of codes. Just a few years later, an upgrade to the system provided them with more than a billion potential codes.

Fully connected homes

Today, having phones, tablets, and laptops that connect to various appliances and function in the home is not just a pipe dream; it is a reality. Chamberlain Group (LiftMaster and Craftsman) have offered the technology MyQ since 2013. There is even the addition of WiFi that has been added to garage door. This was implemented in August of 2017.

Reduce the noise

When you have a new garage door opener, you will find that there is yet another benefit. It can help to reduce the noise when you have openers that utilize rubber belts, which are reinforced using metal fibers, similar to car tires. They are quiet, and you can make things even quieter when you use nylon rollers rather than metal rollers.

Backup battery

Some of the garage door openers that are on the market today also have battery backups, such as models 8500, 8500W, 8550W and 8360W from LiftMaster. This can be quite beneficial for those who live in areas where the power goes out.
