Forget a House Party; Head to the Garage

Have Your Next Party in the Garage

When it’s time to throw a party for a special event like a birthday, family reunion, baby shower, high school graduation, office get-together, etc. this means a lot of work to get your house ready.

However, instead of trying to squeeze all those people into your house, you could just as easily host the event in your garage. While it will still take a bit of imagination to get your garage ready for the big event, there’s no reason it can’t be the perfect place for a celebration.

Ideally, you’d want a two-car garage for this type of event, so you can offer plenty of room for guests to sit without feeling too crowded.

In any case, before the big day arrives, here are some simple ways you can make sure you throw a successful party in your garage.

Do some cleaning and a bit of camouflaging

The first thing you’ll want to do to get your garage ready is move out the larger objects you keep inside it. Obviously, this means your cars, but there are probably also bicycles, a lawn tractor or mower, and larger seasonal items.

Try to put them somewhere out of sight. For most people, this will mean in their backyards under a tarp.

As far as cleaning goes, everyone’s garage is a bit different, but your floors could probably use a good scrubbing. You should also dust all the surfaces, too. Check to make sure all the bulbs in your garage are working and replace any that aren’t as necessary.

If you have large objects that can’t realistically be moved, it’s time for a bit of camouflage. Conceal them with big plastic tablecloths. White is a great choice, but any light colors will do. They will make your garage feel larger to your guests. Add soft lighting and your garage will take on an intimate feel. While we’re talking about colors, a “white wall” will provide a fantastic background for taking pictures. You can also use it for projector presentations.

Tables, chairs, and decorations

Be sure you have enough chairs and tables for people to comfortably sit and eat their food. Otherwise, your party is going to be a bust. You can also take advantage of the room your driveway provides, too.

Before you rent this furniture, check with friends to see if they have any you can simply borrow. As a last resort, you can let people know the party is BYOC (Bring Your Own Chair).

Don’t forget about decorations, both inside and outside your garage. If the forecast is promising, you can use Tiki torches, oil lamps, and other fun outdoor decorations. You may also want to use balloons and streamers.

For a warm festive look, a string of white Christmas lights is always a good idea.

Are bugs a problem where you live?

Then prepare accordingly by packing lots of bug repellant. Putting up a screen current will work well, too. If you already have a fridge in your garage, then you won’t need many coolers to keep food and drinks cold. Otherwise, make sure you have enough coolers to store all your food and refreshments.

Last but not least, remember to have some background music ready.

Food and drinks for your party

The menu you use for your party will depend on the kind of event you put on. Most of the time, though, you can just stick to finger food and/or chips and dip. A potluck works for large groups.

As far as refreshments go, you can either make it BYOB or stick to the basics: beer, wine, soda, and water. Just pick one or two options for each.

A Final thought…

It’s a good idea to tell your neighbors about the party so they know to expect cars parked along the street and a bit more noise than usual.
