When is a Garage Door Business Serious? Here are the Signs You Need to Know

How to Identify Less-Than Professional Garage Door Businesses

At first glance, just about any company can make themselves appear serious and competent. It’s not always easy to tell if you’ve hired the pros, or if you stumbled on the one rotten apple that spoils the whole barrel. And one bad experience with a garage door business could leave you wary of the real professionals who are out to help you stay safe and provide you with quality work.

Learning the signs of a garage door company that is incompetent can help you avoid amateurs. Here are some of those signs, as well as how they act to gain your trust. Remember that you should always be impressed by a garage door company’s expertise and professionalism, not disillusioned by how they represent the garage door industry.

Signs of poorly operated garage door companies:

  • They often operate in heavily populated areas where it’s harder to ask a neighbor or friend if they’ve ever heard of the company.
  • They do a lot more advertisements in phone directories than other businesses. You’ll often see full-page ads in printed directories from these companies.
  • They may have several different business names, no official business address, and a couple of different phone numbers.
  • Their advertisements always say that they are “number one” in just about everything, but especially in emergency and fast repair work.
  • In their ads or on their website, they use photos of their service trucks that don’t correspond at all to the ones they actually have.
  • You feel as though they are just trying to wow you rather than offering you any real expertise.

When to be suspicious:

  • When they promise 24‑hour repair, but don’t mention the hourly rate of service up front.
  • When they have to come back to your house to fix their own repair job, or when they have to leave in the middle of a job to collect replacement parts they didn’t have with them.
  • When they offer discounts that seem too good to be true.
  • When they send a subcontractor out to do the work in a vehicle that is not marked with the company’s name.
  • When they do not have a showroom or warehouse of inventory, or any place of business at all.
  • When they tell you that you need to replace the entire door. Many times, a lack of knowledge of their trade leads to this advice when a simple repair would be sufficient.

Take your time investigating and ask every question.

  • Always ask for a list of customers who can tell you about the new garage installed by them or a repair done. Meet or contact these people to gauge how happy they were with the work performed.
  • Ask those close to you (relatives, friends, co‑workers) if the business you are thinking of using is reliable.
  • Go visit their storeroom or warehouse in person if you can, and judge for yourself how they serve their customers. If that’s not possible, at least check out the address they give you on Google Street View and see what the business looks like.
  • Watch for businesses that present you with two or even three alternatives, whether to repair your garage or purchase a new door. This is the sign of a professional with experience.
