Is insulating your garage worth the cost?

Insulate your garage

First of all, do you need to insulate your garage? Well, if you’ve got an attached garage some government organizations will tell you that the common walls must have a certain R-value, as must the ceiling if there is a room above it. However, if you’ve got a detached garage, there are now regulations to follow at all.

Well then, if there are no set rules, why would you bother insulating the rest of your garage? One word: comfort. If you plan on regularly spending time in your garage, it will need to be insulated for comfort.

We’ve listed six reasons we think you should insulate and maybe even heat your garage, they might convince you to take action!

1. Your garage acts as an additional room

Over the course of the last few years, garages have become extensions of houses, used for all manner of things from gyms to children’s play areas. While you may not have needed an insulated garage when you were just parking your car in it, you will need insulation (and probably heating) if you plan on spending a lot of time in there.

2. Stop the cold air from entering your home

If you have an attached garage you’ve likely already insulated the shared wall and the access door, but if you don’t insulate the rest of the garage, the cold air will seep into your home every time you open the door. The warm air from your home will also escape into the garage.

3. Stop pipes from freezing

If you have a washer and dryer or sink in your garage you don’t have a choice. You simply need insulation. If you don’t insulate your garage, you’ll be left with frozen pipes in the winter.

4. Protect your belongings from humidity

Humidity is rife in uninsulated garages and breeds rust and mould! If you use your garage as storage for recreational equipment it may become damaged.

5. Protect your home from carbon monoxide

If you accidentally start your car while the garage door is closed, the buildup of dangerous carbon monoxide could easily pass through uninsulated walls and into your home, putting your family at risk. Insulation acts as a barrier and contains the dangerous gas within the garage. We would also suggest installing a carbon monoxide detector next to your access door in case of emergencies.

6. Keep noise to a minimum

Insulated garages act as a two‑way sound barrier, noise you make in the garage won’t enter your home or disturb your neighbours outside, and noise from the street won’t come in. You’ll be able to work on your DIY projects at any time without irritating your neighbours, and your kids’ will be able to practice their instruments without you having to fish for the ear plugs!

Don’t forget about the door!

Garage doors act as your garage’s fourth wall, they’re large and, if they are not insulated, the effort you will have put in to insulating the rest of the garage will have been for nothing – all the warm air will escape out of the garage door, and all of the cold air will enter through it.
