There is NOT Such a Thing as a Standard Garage Door Size!

If you’re in the market for a new garage door, you might be thinking that you can go ahead and order a standard-size door. After all, you have a standard two-car garage, so a standard door should work just fine. While this makes sense on the surface, the truth is that there is no standard-size garage door.

Yes, that’s right, there’s no such thing as a standard-size garage door. While it is true that there are common sizes that are used more often than others, every garage is unique and will require a customized size that will fit. With that in mind, we do not recommend asking a garage door specialist for the “standard door” because such a door does not exist.

What do you think about when you envision a standard door?

Perhaps you think a standard door is a white color measuring in at 8 by 7 feet with three windows. While this sounds like a pretty standard door, it is important to understand that what you consider the standard could be much different than what another person might think the standard is.

Someone else might think that a standard door is a windowless sand-colored door that is 10 by 8 feet. Again, it all depends on your perspective. These days, garage doors come in so many different styles and sizes that are customizable, making it pretty difficult to determine any kind of standard-sized door.

With this in mind, picking out a garage door might seem daunting. If you go into the process thinking that there is only one standard door, you might be disappointed to find out that it’s not so simple.

However, if you go into picking a door knowing that there is a large variety of style and color options, you can feel better about the process knowing that you can design the garage door of your dreams.

Now that we’ve explained that there is no standard size door, we would be remiss not to mention that there are some sizes that are more common than others.

The most common sizes are often 8’, 9’, 10’, 12’, 14’, and 16’ width. The most common heights are 7’ and 8’.

You can use these measurements to get a general idea of what the most common sizes are but shouldn’t take this to mean that there is a standard-sized door.

What to consider before buying your new garage door

When choosing a new garage door, there are many things to consider. You might be wondering how to calculate the size of the door and want to know if you should measure based on the existing garage. This won’t matter if you decide to build a brand-new garage.

Those interested in buying a door for an existing garage will be best served by checking out the tools we have to calculate the correct size for your door. One of the most important considerations to make is calculating the space available in your garage to install the tracks to lift the door. These are often just referred to as lifts. There are different types of lifts, depending on your needs and the space you have available.

If you are building a new garage, the first thing to know is how you plan to use the space. This will largely determine what type of door you will need.

What Kind of Vehicles Are You Going to Park in Your Garage?

Once you figure out how you’re going to use your garage, you will have a better understanding of what door your need. One important question to ask is whether or not you will be parking your car in the garage. And if so, how many cars will you be parking. Perhaps you have a motorcycle or an RV, if this is the case, you will need to plan how you wish to store these vehicles.

Garages storing a single car can have a door that measures between seven and ten feet wide. Seven feet will be the smallest width, making fitting your car in a pretty tight squeeze. With that in mind, we usually recommend going with an 8- or 9-foot door.

Those who own a pickup truck or large SUV will be better served by an 8- or 10-foot door. Luckily, we can customize your door size to fit your needs. Our minimum door size is four feet, and our largest width is 20 feet.

Single door widths vary between 7 and 12 feet, while double garage doors vary from 14 to 20 feet.

If you need to park two cars in your garage, your best bet is to go with a 16-foot door. This will ensure you have enough space to comfortably fit two cars with relative ease. A 14-foot door could work, but the cars will be very tight.

Those looking to park two cars in their garage will not be able to make that happen with a 9-foot-wide door. However, you could consider installing two 8-foot single doors. You could also think about a 16-foot double-wide door.

Double doors and two single doors have a similar price. However, if you decide to go with two single doors, you will need to factor in the price of an extra garage door opener. This will slightly add to your total cost if you go with the two single doors option.

Consider adding a LiftMaster opener to your garage

If you’re going with a larger door, it will more than likely weigh more than a smaller width door. With that in mind, heavy doors will need a garage door system that is properly balanced. This can be complicated to accomplish on your own. If you want to save yourself the hassle of adjusting your garage door system on your own, consider contacting a specialist to inspect your door and install the garage door opener system for you.
