Installing a sectional garage door on a shed: Is it a good idea?

Installing a sectional garage door on a shed: Is it a good idea?

Perhaps you have built a shed or a small garage, and you are wondering if a sectional door is the best option for providing access to your building.

Sectional doors have some distinct advantages. Here are four of the most compelling reasons to opt for a sectional door for your barn, shed or small garage.

What are the space requirements for a sectional door?

A sectional garage door might seem like the best option, but first you have to be certain that it will fit in your shed. Here are the minimum size for installing such an door:

Floor area must be at least 112 ft2. For most standard size sheds or garages, this means 8 feet in width and 14 feet in length (or larger).

Headroom is another variable. Your entryway should have 5 inches or more above the door. If you plan to use an electric door opener, you need to add 2 more inches to the headroom requirement.

Advantages of a sectional door

  • Sectional doors are convenient because you can add an electric garage door opener, which isn’t possible with any type of swinging side-by-side doors.
  • Sectional doors are easy to open in any type of weather. If you have two 36″ X 78″ doors that open outward, for example, you will have to remove snow adjacent to the doors after a snowfall before you can even open your door.
  • Sectional doors maximize storage space. What if your side‑by‑side doors open inward? You will have to keep their swing path clear, meaning that you are losing storage space in your shed or garage. Since sectional doors open upwards and do not take up any floor space, you will not have this problem.
  • Sectional doors are ideal for storing large equipment. If you put two access doors side by side, you are limited to a maximum opening width of 72 inches (or 6 feet). If you are putting vehicles or large equipment inside the shed, this is not much room in the entryway.

Convinced? What decisions do you need to make next?

  • The choice of door dimensions is flexible. The only requirement is that the minimum width exceeds 4 feet (1.2  m). The door can be as wide as you want, but you must round it to the nearest inch (25 mm). What about height? This can vary, but for easy access, the door should be between 6′ 6″ and 7′ 0″ (1.98 and 2.1 m)
  • DOOR DESIGNS. As with size, the options for design of our products Here are a few examples of elements you can choose: flush, with thin lines, rectangular embossed designs, or decorative overlays reminiscent of carriage doors. We can help you match the design of your shed door with your garage and the rest of your house.
  • WINDOWS. This is not an afterthought. If you spend time in your shed, you will want to let natural light in. Plus, windows can add an attractive design element to your structure.
  • DECORATIVE HARDWARE. If you would like, you can add accents that will bring to mind classic swing doors with wrought iron handles and hinges.
